The construction of Florida's Interstate Highway System, largely completed in 1991, greatly altered the flow of traffic within the state. Interstates have replaced the much more extensive Federal Highway System as carriers of the overwhelming majority of through traffic. Some stretches of interstate in the Orlando area and in southeastern Florida have daily volume in excess of 100,000 vehicles. Today most hotels and motels are along interstates. Many motels on federal highways such as those in Perry in Taylor County have suffered serious declines in trade as a result of the Interstate system, whereas those in Lake City and Wildwood have greatly benefited from the Interstate System.
